The Orange Lions, coming off of their impressive win last week against Chagrin Falls, were able to fight off The Wickliffe Blue Devils Friday night to improve to 5-1 on the season. The game started out looking as if The Orange Lions would control the line of scrimmage and dominate the game based on how they marched down the field on their first drive. However, that drive stalled due to penalties and The Lions failed on a 4th down and short. That was the determining factor, illustrating that The Blue Devils would not be going away easily.
Wickliffe jumped ahead first with a 10 yard touchdown run making the score 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Orange Lions responded with a touchdown of their own from a yard out when senior QB Ryan Singer punched it in the end-zone. As The Lions struggled to defend the Wickliffe's Wing-T offense, The Blue Devils threatened The Lions twice inside the red-zone in the second quarter. Luckily for The Lions, senior CB Lamar Dixon would deny Wickliffe touchdowns when he would strip the football loose, allowing Orange to recover. The Lions and The Blue Devils went into halftime tied with a score of 7-7.
The second half was just as entertaining the first. The Orange Lions scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter with scores from senior RB Lamar Dixon (80 yard run) and senior WR Milan Pittmon (43 yards from Ryan Singer). However, The Wickliffe Blue Devils answered in the 4th quarter with scores, one of which came with 19 seconds left putting the Blue Devils down by a point. Wickliffe could have sent the game into overtime with an extra point field goal, but instead decided to win the game and go for the 2 point conversion! With the game on the line, Wickliffe quickly broke the huddle, lined up, and ran a toss to the edge. That is when senior FS Jeff Immel sniffed the play out and attacked down hill, making the tackle in the backfield, ending the game with a final score of 21-20, and improving The Lions to 5-1 on the season.
This week, The Orange Lions (5-1; 2-1) will travel to Chesterland to face The West Geauga Wolverines (5-1; 3-0) in what will be a showdown in the Chagrin Valley Conference. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm, so come out and make the travel in support of your Orange Lions as they look to continue their historic season!
Thank you to all who have continued to support The Orange Lions throughout the season!
